Starting from the analysis of technological interdependencies and their impact on the economic and productive system, the Area plays a key role in identifying opportunities and addressing the challenges of innovation in an increasingly digitalized and complex global context.

The Fondazione Ugo Bordoni area dedicated to emerging technologies focuses on studying Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Technologies, the Internet of Things, Distributed Ledger Technologies, Cloud, Virtual Worlds and High-Performance Computing, supporting institutions and businesses in digital transformation and the development of innovative solutions to promote competitiveness and sustainability.

The activities of the New Technologies Area are structured into three main functions:

  • Observatory and Governance – monitors and forecasts the evolution of enabling technologies through methodologies such as technology scrutiny, scouting and foresight, providing useful tools to analyze the regulatory framework and public policies. This activity is carried out with the aim of defining specific strategies and contributing to the management of national and European projects in the areas of regulation, standardization and technological interoperability.

  • Sector Intelligence and Business Impact – analyzes technological interdependencies and key industrial sectors, with a focus on the economic and employment impact of digital transformations. The Area develops methodologies to assess the impact of enabling technologies on industrial supply chains, identifying risks and opportunities as well as providing tools to enhance value chain resilience. Additionally, it evaluates economic benefits and implications of national public policy, integrating them with comparative analyses of international experiences.

  • AI & Data Science for Public Policies – focuses on the use of advanced AI and data analysis tools to support institutional decision-making. The Area studies predictive models and conducts experiments to optimize public policy design, incentive programs and regulatory interventions. Advanced modeling enables the analysis of the effects of emerging technologies across different economic and social sectors, contributing to the definition of targeted interventions.

Another important  element of the Area is its ability to map complex technological and industrial scenarios, integrating technical-scientific and economic expertise that enables technology transfer, identifying innovation opportunities and fostering collaboration between research, industry and governance.

Through dialogue with universities, research organizations and institutions, the New Technologies Area aims to strengthen the country’s ability to tackle challenges related to innovation and digital transition.

The goal is to guide institutions and businesses in the adoption of advanced technological solutions, exploiting the opportunities offered by emerging technologies and creating the foundation for a resilient, competitive and sustainable ecosystem.
